Course Description: This workshop exposes mental health professionals to the art of incorporating nature into their own counseling practices. Participants will learn about current research on the intersection of nature and mental health, learn specific suitable therapeutic approaches, as well as the practical elements to consider when taking clients outdoors.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this presentation, the participant will:

  • Assess client fit for ecotherapy including how to understand a client’s nature autobiography
  • Describe Schreiber-Pan’s Ecological Model of Psychological Well-being
  • Utilize ethical and legal considerations into your practice
  • Apply NIT interventions and activities, for example, metaphor, ritual, and ceremony
  • Explain the Attention Restoration Theory
  • Experience how exposure to challenges in nature boosts resiliency
  • Discuss how connectedness to Nature shows a positive correlation with positive affect, vitality, autonomy, personal growth and purpose in life
