Session Description: This workshop will focus on supporting clinicians who treat adolescents and their families, enabling them not only to effectively address teens’ social, emotional and behavioral challenges, but also to nurture a blossoming of self-reliance, self-determination and self-respect.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
· List at least five phenomena that may contribute to the currently high rates of adolescent anxiety, depression, and suicidal behavior.
· Discuss strategies for fostering conversations that invite teenagers to explore an expanded sense of self during adolescence—helping them to assess who they were, who they are, and who they are becoming.
· Identify strategies for working with teenagers who resist self-discovery and self-awareness, and who have begun succumbing to despair and hopelessness.
· Describe strategies for coaching parents when it comes to understanding their teen’s struggles, and responding to them in ways that promote self-acceptance, healing and maturity while still holding their children accountable for their behavior.
