Session Description: This workshop will provide an overview of the relationship between eating disorders, body image disturbance, and self-harming behaviors. Eating disorders will be conceptualized as self-harming behaviors; additional self-harming behaviors that can accompany eating disorders will also be discussed. The discussion will focus on the impact of the pandemic on body dissatisfaction, eating disorders and other self-harming behaviors.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Describe each of the eating disorder diagnoses.
- Describe body image, body image disturbance, and body image distortion.
- Conceptualize eating disorders as self-harming behaviors.
- Understand the connection between eating disorders and other self-harming behaviors.
- Understand the connection between body image, eating disorders, and self-harm.
- Describe the impact that the pandemic has had on the incidence of eating disorders, body image, and self-harming behaviors.
Presenter Bio: Stefanie Gilbert, PhD
Stefanie Gilbert is a Clinical Psychologist who has worked in private practice in the DC metropolitan area for the past 20 years. Dr. Gilbert graduated Magna cum Laude from Harvard College, where she was awarded the Psychology Department Faculty Prize for her research on eating disorders and fear of success. She earned a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and spent several years working as a journalist before returning to school at the University of South Florida, where she earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. She completed her internship at Howard University Counseling Service and spent a decade on the faculty of Howard’s Psychology Department where she helped establish Howard’s Women’s Studies Program. After receiving tenure there in 2007, Dr. Gilbert opened her private practice in Bethesda, MD, specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, body image, and mood disorders. She enjoys working with athletes and is an approved clinician with the National Football League. During the pandemic, she moved with her husband to Florida, and continues her practice virtually. She is licensed in Maryland and Florida and authorized under PsyPact to work virtually with people in 40 states.
Workshop registrants will receive a code prior to the webinar to log on to Zoom and participate in the online session.
IMPORTANT: Attendance will be monitored. Participants must be logged on to the meeting by the workshop start time and participate in the entire event in order to earn CE credit.
Pro Bono Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Pro Bono Counseling maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The Maryland Boards of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors and Therapists certify that this program meets the criteria for 1.5 credit hours of continuing education for social workers (Category 1), professional counselors, and therapists (Category A) licensed in Maryland.
CE credit is granted to participants with documented attendance at individual workshops. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who log on late or depart early from a session. It is the responsibility of registrants to comply with these requirements.
