Session Description:
Learn about the licensed practice of Art Therapy in the State of Maryland and the core beliefs that inform art therapy as a clinical practice. Holding in the balance that clinicians broadly seek relational, meaningful ways to support client self-expression, attendees will engage in hands-on opportunities to experience the connections and narratives possible through non-verbal process-oriented methods.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Define the field of art therapy, specifically the licensed practice in the State of Maryland, discerning differences between other licensed professionals
- Identify how engagement with art materials and processes connects to self-expression, health promotion, and meaning making
- Articulate how one’s workshop-based art experience might be applicable to clinical work with diverse populations including individuals who have experienced trauma
Presenter Bio:
Cathy Goucher, MA, ATR-BC is a Licensed Clinical Professional Art Therapist (LCPAT) who has been in private practice and in special education settings for over twenty-five years. In 2010, Cathy helped found Make Studio, a non-profit, progressive art studio for adult artists with disabilities. Cathy is also the Founding Director, now Department Chair, for the art therapy programs at Notre Dame of Maryland University (2018). The department includes an undergraduate major in art therapy and a CAAHEP accredited MA in Art Therapy graduate training program. The graduate program, the only in Maryland, has successfully launched twenty graduate students to date and works to prepare clinicians who will give back to and meaningfully serve their communities through delivery of culturally attuned, social justice forward, inclusive art therapy practices.
IMPORTANT: Attendance will be taken. Participants must arrive to the workshop at the start time and participate in the entire event in order to earn CE credit.
Pro Bono Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Pro Bono Counseling maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The Maryland Boards of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors and Therapists certify that this program meets the criteria for two (2) credit hours of continuing education for social workers (Category 1), professional counselors, and therapists (Category A) licensed in Maryland.
CE credit is granted to participants with documented attendance at individual workshops. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who arrive late or depart early from a session. It is the responsibility of registrants to comply with these requirements.
