Session Description:
This training will present concrete strategies that clinicians can use when working with Autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent clients. Topics to be covered include the impacts of power differences and neurotypical privilege on clinician-client interactions, diagnostic and identity-based language considerations, ways to accommodate differences in communication needs, and the importance of prioritizing client autonomy.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss how a perspective of neurodiversity is different from a medical model view of Autism and other neurological differences
- Explain the characteristics of Autism as a neurotype
- Identify potential strengths and challenges when a client lives in an environment where neurotypical norms are enforced
- Apply concrete, evidence-based strategies to create an affirming therapeutic experience and physical environment for neurodivergent clients
- Describe neurodiversity affirming responses to clinical scenarios
Presenter Bio: August Stockwell, PhD
August Stockwell, PhD (they/them pronouns) is a neurodiversity educator and consultant with a passion for disability justice and accessible mental health supports. They were the Founder of Upswing Advocates, an LGBTQ2IA and neurodiversity focused nonprofit organization, and they have 14 years of experience educating current and future helping professionals on a variety of topics related to culturally-sensitive clinical practice. As a neurodivergent, queer, and non-binary human, August presents from a community member perspective, as well as from a researcher and educator perspective.
Workshop registrants will receive a code prior to the webinar to log on to Zoom and participate in the online session.
IMPORTANT: Attendance will be monitored. Participants must be logged on to the meeting by the workshop start time and participate in the entire event in order to earn CE credit.
Pro Bono Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Pro Bono Counseling maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The Maryland Boards of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors and Therapists certify that this program meets the criteria for three (3) credit hours of continuing education for social workers (Category 1), professional counselors, and therapists (Category A) licensed in Maryland.
CE credit is granted to participants with documented attendance at individual workshops. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who log on late or depart early from a session. It is the responsibility of registrants to comply with these requirements.
