Session Description: The presenter will draw from research and her professional experiences as a practicing school counselor and licensed therapist to share concrete ways clinicians can partner with caregivers and schools to equip children with the skills and support, they need to interact successfully with peers, feel a sense of belonging at school, take social risks and recover from perceived social slights.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Apply strategies that teach clients’ concrete social skills
- Apply ways to help children assume positive intent in peers
- Utilize concrete strategies to help children self-regulate and preserve social relationships
- Apply strategies to help children take social and academic risks
- Identify why a child might be struggling and collaborate with caregivers and school professionals to support them
Presenter Bio: Phyllis L. Fagell, LCPC
Phyllis L. Fagell, LCPC is the author of Middle School Matters: The 10 Key Skills Kids Need to Thrive in Middle School and Beyond – and How Parents Can Help. Phyllis also is the school counselor at Sheridan School in Washington, D.C., a psychotherapist in private practice and a frequent contributor to publications including The Washington Post, CNN, U.S. News & World and Psychology Today. Phyllis is a graduate of Dartmouth College, the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University (MSJ), and Johns Hopkins University (MS). She lives in Bethesda, MD with her husband and their three children.

The Matt Golczewski Memorial Fund was established to contribute to the causes that were closest to Matt throughout his life. All funds raised in Matt’s name will, at the discretion of the Memorial Fund, be divided and directed toward scholarships, cancer research, and mental health activism.

Workshop registrants will receive a code prior to the webinar to log on to Zoom and participate in the online session.
IMPORTANT: Attendance will be monitored. Participants must be logged on to the meeting by the workshop start time and participate in the entire event in order to earn CE credit.
Pro Bono Counseling is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Pro Bono Counseling maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The Maryland Boards of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors and Therapists certify that this program meets the criteria for 1.5 credit hours of continuing education for social workers (Category 1), professional counselors, and therapists (Category A) licensed in Maryland.
CE credit is granted to participants with documented attendance at individual workshops. Attendance is monitored. Credit will not be granted to registrants who log on late or depart early from a session. It is the responsibility of registrants to comply with these requirements.
