Interactive Community Event – Community Healing Through Arts and Movement

Baltimore, MD, May 10, 2022 –Pro Bono Counseling, a nonprofit organization that links Marylanders experiencing difficulty accessing mental health care with volunteer licensed counselors and other resources, will hold its 25th annual Speakers Forum fundraising event, “Community Healing Through Arts and Movement,” on Saturday, May 14, 2022, from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM, at its office in Baltimore.

This year’s Speakers Forum event will include continuing education workshops, wellness demonstrations, and a community resource fair. Featured speaker Maria Hamilton Abegunde, PhD, will present, “It Take a Village: Communities as Sites of Memory and Healing.” Dr. Abegunde is a faculty member in African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University. Through Spirit & Place, Dr. Abegunde is a Civic Reflections trainer, a Powerful Conversations on Race facilitator, and the creator of the Racial Trauma and Healing series.

Featured speakers Dorothy Adamson Holley, PhD, LCSW-C, and Deirdre Osiomwan, RN, BSN, will present “Talk Therapy (Alone) Is Not Enough: Creative Practices for Trauma Treatment.” Dr. Dorothy Adamson Holley is a Developmental Psychologist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who integrates psychology and spirituality in clinical practice, and is an author, recording artists, songwriter, vocalist, percussionist, dancer, harmonicist, and Healer Through Music.  Deirdre Osiomwan is a Registered Nurse who has over 30 years of experience in health care and facilitates clinical/healing workshops, including Rhythmic Healing Circles.

Workshop participants will earn three continuing education credits.

“This event was originally created to provide the opportunity for mental health professionals to engage with leading experts on topics relevant to their practices,” explained Pro Bono Counseling Executive Director Amy Greensfelder. “New this year is the addition of community partner and organization participation to allow even more resource sharing.”

Community members and organizations joining in the resource fair include: Healing City Baltimore, Baltimore Homa Community, Institute for Healing, Move and Still, Roberta’s House, and Dr. Lauren Rubenstein.

Since its founding in 1991, Pro Bono Counseling, a non-profit 501c(3) corporation, has helped over 30,000 individuals and families throughout Maryland connect with volunteer counselors and obtain the mental health care they could not otherwise afford. Presently, Pro Bono Counseling has over 850 volunteer clinicians all over the state of Maryland who give over 10,000 hours of their time each year.
