How to Refer a Client

If you have any questions about your referral, please call us first, and we will discuss your referral with you.

How should my client begin?

Please call 410.825.1001 to speak with someone on our clinical team.

Intake information will be gathered on the telephone to accurately define your client's counseling needs. This usually takes about 20 minutes. Based on their needs, the client will be linked with a therapist and/or referred to additional resources.

How long does it take to see a therapist?

Usually, the client will be working with a licensed clinical social worker, psychologist, certified professional counselor or psychiatric nurse within 10 days after their call.  There is never a waiting list.

What if my client has special needs?

The Pro Bono Counseling Project will do its best to accommodate the client's work schedule, transportation and language needs. Approximately 650 licensed therapists whose offices are located throughout Maryland participate in the Pro Bono Counseling Project.

If the therapist and the client are not compatible, may the client see someone else?

Yes. The clinical coordinator will try to link the client with another clinician.

Are there a limited number of sessions?

No. Therapists do their best to help their clients succeed with their goals.

Will the client need to be in contact with Pro Bono Counseling after they start seeing the therapist?

Yes. We will call the client with follow-up questions about their therapy at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after beginning counseling. Also, if they have any concerns with their therapy or would like to be linked with a different clinician, they may call us back.

Can the Pro Bono Counseling Project help my client if they only need treatment for drug or alcohol abuse?

No. These addictions need to be treated in a specialized program.

What other guidelines do you have for who can receive counseling?

See the section on Who is Eligible for Free Counseling for more information.
